Today the beauty world lost a true icon, Vidal Sassoon. Whether you’re a hair stylist or not, you can’t help but be inspired by this man. He revolutionized the art of hair styling, creating styles such as the geometric perm, and the bob, which three of us here at The Parlour Brooklyn are currently rocking.
Rest in Peace Vidal, and thanks.
Good news friends! We have new products in the salon, and no they don’t go on your head!
The first is a brand new handsoap by our friends at Hand in Hand. All Hand in Hand soap is shipped using eco-friendly packaging, comes with a free carbon offset, and a portion of all proceeds is used to save 50 square feet of rainforest for every bar sold. Now that alone is a reason to come into the salon and pick one up! (FYI, they also smell amazing…)
We’re also carrying Priti NYC nail polish in an array of different colors, with names like “Red Maple” (my personal favorite) and “Baby Toes Cactus.” They’re perfect for the summer and are actually GOOD for your nails. They’re completely non-toxic and eco-friendly, something we here at The Parlour Brooklyn fully believe in. Come check them out before WE buy them all ;)
Have a good week y’all .

Oh one more thing, we are having a bridal hair class this coming Monday April 30th and are in need of a few long haired models. Get in touch with us if you’re interested!
Blonde, Pregnant and Aghhhh….Roots! Whenever one of my clients gets in the chair and tells me she is pregnant and worried about not coloring her hair here is the advice I give. After reading a lot about it I feel the most important thing is what is going to make you happy. If it doesn’t matter to have roots than do nothing. I have been a bleach and tone and have decided to highlight and keep the bleach off of my scalp since I am already very sensitive. If it is grey coverage I see no harm in covering the grey and according to some doctors they say the amount your body absorbs is extremely minimal and all they babies delivered were completely normal. Trust your gut during pregnancy and if it feels better to stick au natural I would honor that. If you feel more like yourself having color services than that’s ok too. My thoughts are if mama isn’t happy than nobody’s happy!

Good news for all you vintage lovin babes out there, Miracles Vintage is having another sale! Come on down to The Parlour Brooklyn this Sunday April 22nd from 12-8 for fabulous clothing and complimentary mimosas. Its supposed to be a beautiful day, why not spend it shopping?
IT’S A GIRL!!!!
Here’s a special note we received from Cally!
My Dearest Clients,
My deepest apologies for my abrupt disappearance but it was all for good reason, the arrival of our delightful baby girl Pepper Lou Lynnerup Martin. She decided to make a surprise appearance and come into the world a bit early, and I do love a good surprise. Over the last six weeks we have been in the front car of the most exciting and challenging roller coaster ride of our lives, but she is doing beautifully and it is starting to look like we are coming out of the woods soon, and she will be home with us where she belongs.
I hope you are all doing well and I look forward to my return in the fall.
Have a wonderful summer, and I can’t wait to hear about all of your adventures.
Warmest,
Cally Martin
HAPPY BIRTHDAY……TO US!!!
Three years ago today, The Parlour Brooklyn opened in the Greenpoint area.
We wouldn’t be who we are without the support of our clients and neighbors. So, thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of this wonderful, creative community.
As a team, we want to thank Nackie for her vision, love, ambition and encouragement. We love you!!
We’re giving out free hugs all day…so stop by!

Even though todays weather isn’t ideal, this week was SO gorgeous. Seems as if people are already swapping their winter coats for short shorts. Being a California girl, I couldn’t be more pumped about this.
Which brings me to our spring inspiration meeting. We were asked to bring in ten photos of anything that is currently inspiring us to move out of the cold dark winter into the fresh air of the coming months. I love these meetings because I always walk away feeling even MORE inspired by the ladies’ photos. Maybe getting a glimpse at some of them will help inspire YOU…
Nackie is feeling very beachy this spring, and being from the sunshine state, her photos were an array of bright pastels, soft flowing hair, and of course, the beach! This was one of her favs…
I don’t know about you, but I would wear this coat YEAR ROUND.
Jes’ photos had a recurring theme of white…which brings me to my favorite in the bunch, Ms Pina Bausch..on a trapeze no less!

This was one of Megs photos….
Not only is this MY favorite show of all time, but, “The Rachel” color is actually making a comeback. At least we hope it is. Come see Meg!
Jill was inspired by this months, LL Bean Catalog, particularly the fly fishing lures. Something about the color placement combined with feathers make for some interesting inspiration. Who wants to go fishin’?
Miss Kristin Jones had a lot of color running through her photos, except for this one, which is amazing.
I love everything about this photo. Edgy, yet soft.
Stefani is also from the west, Arizona to be exact. So she is inspired by everything desert and outdoorsy. Spring and summer to her mean camp outs, swimming in the lake, and native american inspired looks…
This is from the Vogue Enfants Printemps 2009 issue. So beautiful.
Jen, or as I like to refer to her, JP, is all about the precision haircut…everything perfectly smooth and in the right place. Particularly on shorter cuts like this one from dearcreatures.com’s spring 2012 catalog…
Cynthia is feeling long hair this spring. When googling her images she came across photos of women in the Victorian era, all of which had SUPER long locks…
I mean COME ON.
I am usually the queen of darkness. Always wearing black and never changing it up. But much like Nackie, I am super inspired by the idea of bright pastels. I want to wear nothing but blues, yellows and pinks! I came across this artist by the name of Alberto Sevenso who did a serious of, “ink in water,” images. I am so in love with them. They almost look like flowing gowns. If you have a minute, take a look at his work. He’s amazing.
Well there it is my friends. Until next time…let us know what is inspiring YOU this spring. =]

This past Sunday, Jes and I had the pleasure of representing The Parlour Brooklyn at Wedding Crashers. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a fantastic wedding fair held at the Green Building in Gowanus.

SUCH a beautiful location.
There were over forty vendors there from all over Brooklyn helping happy couples plan their special day.
Our table was simple and elegant. And in a prime location. Right in between the good people of Herb N Peach, an awesome catering company with delicious food, and the lovely ladies of By Brooklyn, a shop in Carroll Gardens selling all kinds of Brooklyn made goods.
We also got to meet, and develop total mutual girl crushes on the wonderful ladies of Tinsel & Twine, a Brooklyn based event design shop. I was immediately drawn to their lovely sense of style, as well as their fabulous hair and makeup (obvi). We even got a shout out on their blog! Take a gander. And please look to them for all of your party planning needs…I know I will.
On top of promoting all of the girls here at the salon, we also brought along some of our dear friend Ashley Ruprecht of Faeth Millinery’s custom made fascinators. We managed to hand out every single one of her cards, which was not a difficult task. They were a hit!

Needless to say, it was a wonderful event that I was proud to be a part of. Brooklyn is such a great place. It’s almost overwhelming the sense of community there is between smaller businesses. Everyone wants to help each other out. It was a day full of friends, food, a few fancy cocktails, and of course, silly photos…
10:00 am, feelin’ pretty.

3:00 pm, feelin’ tired.

We were a good team, matching hair AND dresses.
Luckily it all paid off, I’m pretty sure we booked a few brides for the year. Hooray!

Oscar night was full of different looks. Hair was up. Hair was down. Hair was long. Hair was short. Makeup was kept simple, with a few red lips here and there. Here are a few of my favorite looks.
Rooney Mara, flawless.
The fabulous Michelle Williams. I swear if I could look like her, I would cut my hair off TOMORROW.
Emma Stone. Love the winged eyeliner.
Red lip worn by the gorgeous Milla Jovovich.

And Meryl, just because.
What were some of YOUR favorite looks?
